"Your Old Life was Frantic, Running From Silence"

Poem by Maulana Jelaluddin Rumi
Translated by Coleman Barks

Die..and be quiet
Quietness is the surest sign that you've died
Your old life was frantic, running from silence
The speechless full moon comes out now

Tanam Farsooda Jaan Para

Jami

Tanam Farsooda jaan para
Ze Hijra Ya Rasulullah
Dillam Paz Murda Aawara
Ze Isyaa. Ya Rasulullah!

My body is dissolving in your separation
And my soul is breaking into pieces. Ya Rasulullah!
Due to my sins, My heart is weak and becoming enticed. Ya Rasulullah!
______________________________________________

Choon Soo’e Mun Guzar Aari
Manne Miskeen Zanaa Daari
Fida-E-Naqsh-E-Nalainat
Kunam Ja. Ya Rasulullah!

When you pass by me
Then even in my immense poverty, ecstatically,
I must sacrifice my soul on your blessed sandal. Ya Rasulullah!
______________________________________________

Ze Jaame Hubb To Mustam
Ba Zanjeere To Dil Bustam
Nu’mi Goyam Ke Mun Bustum
Sukun Daa. Ya Rasulullah!

I am drowned in the taste of your love
And the chain of your love binds my heart.
Yet I don’t say that I know this language (of love). Ya Rasulullah!
______________________________________________

Ze Kharda Khaish Hairaanam
Siyaa Shud Roze Isyaanam
Pashemaanam, Pashemaanam, Pashemaanam. Ya Rasulullah!

I am worried due to my misdeeds;
And I feel that my sins have blackened my heart. Ya Rasulullah!
I am in distress! I am in distress! I am in distress! Ya Rasulullah!
______________________________________________

Choon Baazoo’e Shafaa’at Raa
Khushaa’I Bar Gunaagara
Makun Mahruume Jaami Raa
Daraa Aan. Ya Rasulullah!

Ya Rasulullah! When you spread your hands to intercede for the sinners,
Then do not deprive Jaami of your exalted intercession.

The great Persian poet, mystic and scholar Mawlānā Nūr al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Jāmī was born in the Jām district of Ḫurāsān in 817/1414 ( d.1492 AD (A.H. 898), Herat) and educated in the literary, religious and Sufi tradition at Herat and Samarkand. His works are diverse and numerous, among them an exegesis of the Qurān and a compendium of notices of over 500 Saints. Jāmī spent nearly all of his life living quietly in Herat amidst his studies, poetry, and spiritual exercises. Though honored by his sovereigns, he never felt compelled to lavish them with flattery or the dedication of his poems.

A Sharp-Toothed Wolf May Become Audacious

Shaykh Saadi Shirazi (1184-1283)

I heard that a dervish, burning in the fire of poverty and sewing patch upon patch, said to comfort his mind:

'We are contented with dry bread and a patched robe
For it is easier to bear the load of one's own trouble
than that of thanks to others.'

-
Who sold abstinence, knowledge and piety
Filled a granary but burnt it clean away.
-
Severity and mildness together are best
Like a bleeder who is a surgeon and also applies a salve.
A wise man uses neither severity to excess
Nor mildness; for it lessens his authority.
He neither exalts himself too much
Nor exposes himself at once to contempt.
-
A youth said to his father: 'O wise man,
Give me for instruction one advice like an aged person.'
He said: 'Be kind but not to such a degree
That a sharp-toothed wolf may become audacious.'

Yearning For the Prophet (Sal'lal'laho Aleyhe Wasallam)

Pir Mehr Ali Shah (Golra Sharif, Rawalpindi, Pakistan)pppp
-
Why is it that the yearning for the Loved One (i.e., the Holy Prophet) is especially strong today?
Why is my heart sadder today than even before?
Why does longing penetrate every tissue of mine?
And why are the eyes shedding tears like a shower of rain?

May this Face (of the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H)) remain before my eyes,
In my last moments (of life) and on the Resurrection Day!
Then (also) in my grave, and at the time of crossing the (razor-sharp) Bridge (on the Judgment Day as a test to separate the virtuous ones from the sinners);
Only then shall the fake ones become pure (in the sight of Allah).

Oh The White Moon Rose Over Us!

طلع البدر علينا

Oh The White Moon Rose Over Us

من ثنيات الوداع
Min thanīyātil-wadā‘
From The Valley of al-Wadā‘.

وجب الشكر علينا

And We Owe it to Show Gratefulness

ما دعى لله داع

Where the Call is to Allah.

أيها المبعوث فينا
Ayyuhal mab‘ūthu fīnā
Oh You Who were Raised Amongst Us

جئت بالأمر المطاع
